Access to Quality Education: The Pathway to Development, Peace and Progress

My writing is centered on the SDG'S GOAL-4 on QUALITY EDUCATION. We all are familiar with the current predicament and impoverished state of our Country Nigeria, our Educational Sector has nothing to write home about, little wonder we see our fellow Nigerians who are from a very rich background, whose parents are Senators and Political Leaders, being sponsored to school outside the Country (to have access to Quality Education which is not available in Nigeria). The Educational System in Nigeria is in shambles and our dear Government is careless, with no hope for the future Generation. There's no access to quality Infrastructural amenities, innovation, and technology, Gadgets, and Funds for research, and many more. How then do we intend to sustain what we don't have?

Access to Quality Education: The Pathway to Development, Peace, and Progress

In the words of Maria Montesson "Establishing lasting peace is the work of Education: all Politics can do is keep us out of War.  Education remains a sustainable pivotal for driving a well oriented and responsible citizenship, to coexist in peace and harmony and in view contribute to the development of his/her immediate society. 

 "A tree, they say does not stand alone to become a Forest." If we must desire rapid growth and development in Nigeria as a NATION, our Leaders must put heads together to revamp our educational system, therefore providing Quality Education that will stir up transformational progress and development across all the 36 States in the Country.  

    Education is the act of transferring skills, values, beliefs, and character to a learner. It is an institution put in place to train a child, bringing him into the full understanding of who he is, and what his potentials are, and giving him a platform to develop it. It aims at the full all-around development of a person and is done under the guidance of a professional.
    Quality education refers to the education devoid of flaws and this may include employment of good and skillful teachers, good salary for teachers to be paid on time, conducive learning environment, good moral and educational standard, provision of learning facilities and gadgets, good and quality reading and instructional materials, good supervisory council, among others. 

     Therefore, being an established fact that anything of high quality requires money but affordability should go hand in hand to make quality education accessible to all. The Government cant boast of this Institutional Sector being in good shape & structure despite the remunerations the government gets, the tax generated. The private individuals who have come together to establish good and quality Schools which are passive to be meant for the rich as they are no exceptional to the payment of tax.

For instance: Nigerian Federal schools are the least attended to couple with the low grant allocated in the Educational Sector, perhaps this might explain the many uncompleted classrooms, unavailability of gadgets and machines, the incessant strikes, inadequate teachers, low and late payment, which are also the challenges faced in all Federal Institutions across the Countries.  

Since quality education is the bedrock of every Nation and about 60-70% of the population are exposed to very low quality of it, can the lack of this 'Quality Education be the reason why Nigeria is lacking behind in terms of development, technology, innovations, and good Leadership? 

     Education is interested in the full all-around development of an individual thus making provisions for it through its curriculum and syllabus. 

Curriculum which is the totality of all planned and unplanned learning experiences, a learner is to go through under the guidance of a professional, in conjunction with the syllabus makes for the systematic arrangement of teaching and learning which thereby enable the child to be exposed to balanced growth. Education starts from the cradle, as a child grows he begins to get familiar with his person, senses, and environment. There's a gradual unwrapping of his person and the relevant training and techniques put in place to help modify, equip, and inform him/her to become a better person in society. 

      Moreover, the unavailability of gadgets, learning materials, good teachers affects this process thus distorting the gradual form of learning. Students would not be able to practice the theories they are being taught making learning not to be concrete, unemployment of good teachers would be a threat to individual differences and management, the low standard of the school can admit students who ought not to be in the school thereby corrupting others, the incessant strikes affects the psychology of students and makes them waste a lot of time and youthfulness in school, some get frustrated with the wasting time, drop out, and begin to engage in robbery, kidnapping, among others.

If attention is given to education and the strikes stopped, individuals would be able to go through smooth and fast learning thus dispersing them into the labor market at an early age so they can make good use of their youthfulness and contribute productively to the growth and sustainable development of this Nation. 

1. Education helps to eradicate ignorance and instill discipline and good character through the integration of cane, punishment, scolding, encouragement, among others.

2. it would help to reduce and tame indiscipline and bad behavioral character and thereby providing a serene environment for man to live in.

The access to quality education in Nigeria will help equip students with literacy numeracy skills thereby eradicating poverty because individuals would be able to align with opportunities. Citizens are able to make money with their reading, writing, and reasoning skills, entrepreneurs too would be able to weave it into their creativity thereby boosting production in each Nation-State.

The skills help citizens engage in business with the outside world as they would be able to relate and converse with the advance informative techniques. Since quality education boosts creativity and reasoning, citizens can become owners of their businesses and even employers of labor, thus reducing unemployment and mismanagement of resources within the country.

“Education itself serves as a means to an end, by providing employment to experienced and qualified teachers and in return inculcate, impact and train others to earn a living independently.” 

       Furthermore, the Socials philosophy is reflected in the NPE's aims and goals thus enabling the training of individuals to align to what's expected in a society. The societal cultural values are weaved into education making for the training of responsible citizens. We know of things that happened in the past because education aided its documentation, and this gives room for every generation to know what was obtainable in the world before him.

With this cultural heritages and languages are not lost as these languages and cultures are preserved and are being studied in school thereby promoting nationality and a sense of belonging. Teach whatever you don't want to be lost to the younger generation, and then it moves from generation to generation. Hence, the need for Quality Education in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. 

     A country can never be developed with one stream of the profession. Education has diverse fields in which one can delve into, while some are into the study of the human system, some into the government of the land, some into history, some in entertainment, among others.

Thus making a host of trained personnel available for each field. It also aids professional complementation which makes for collective building as a doctor needs a teacher to teach his children, so also a teacher need farmers to provide food produces for healthy living, farmers also require the services of a lawyer, with each one coming together from his or her different field to build the Nation collectively.

 A quality education now is viewed as one with good technological provisions inclusive. With this in mind, citizens can merge their creativity with technology, carry out research, and make new Innovations:

The study of agriculture without adequate machines would only make a mockery of the field, and as a Nation, we need more agriculturalists to boost farm produce for commercial purposes, this would reduce the high importation of food produces, thereby saving enough money and the lives of citizens as they would no longer feed on preserved food and junks. It will also make food produces cheaper and accessible for all.

Health is wealth they say, a Nation full of healthy people would be very productive.  Imagine a medical student studying medicine without adequate facilities, there'll be no measure for the casualties that'll be recorded, those who are privileged to have access to education become a problem to the Society because they will have no sense of belonging, nothing to contribute to the development of his immediate society, hence become shenanigans and disrupt the peace of the Nation.

          In conclusion, If Nigeria as a Nation must stand out in terms of Sustainable Development, Progress, innovation and Creativity, and Responsible leadership, then our Leaders must act now. The future is very clear and not blink. We must not fold our hands and desire positive changes, it will forever remain an illusion if we refuse to take adequate actions to give Quality Education to our Sons and Daughters of this great Nation. 

         Therefore, the aim of Quality Education is to see to the full all-around development of an individual, participating actively in Decision making of his/her immediate Society, becoming a Key Stakeholder in the Sustainable Development, Progress, Peace, and Unity of this Nation.

This however can never be achieved without Quality Education, instead, it will only make a mockery of it going the other way round. With this view at heart, responsible citizens and leaders are raised, and individuals become independent at a very young age because there won't be records of any incessant strike, poor infrastructural amenities, and an unconducive environment for learning.

The lack of it has made a lot of our productive youths travel out to further their studies, coming back with a different orientation as education is attached to the society, opinions foreign to our indigenous society would keep rising and gradually we'll keep drifting from the contemporary African principles.  

Quality Education remains the major pivotal for Sustainability and Development, Peace, and Progress for Nigeria and Africa at large.
