Overeating And How To Stop Overeating

Overeating is a common condition that leads to other conditions. Read on to find out.

Food is good, important, necessary, and a whole lot more adjectives. However, there comes a time when one can be said to be overeating.

Overeating is a situation where someone eats more food, thereby consuming more calories than one's body needs, or what one's body is used to.

The following are some causes of overeating:

1. Skipping meals:

This is why one is always advised to not skip any meal, most especially breakfast. The reason is that, when you skip a meal, you become so hungry that on your next meal, you are eating two meals, which is more than what your body can handle at a particular time. This is why you shouldn't (skip) your meals.

2. Stress:

This is another cause of overeating because one becomes tired and over tiredness leads to excessive hunger. Take it one step at a time. Don't try to overwork yourself, just so that you won't be overstressed.

3. Emotional reasons:

Sometimes, one can be passing through serious emotional stress, and this can make the person turn to binge eating as a form of solace.

What are the effects of overeating?

While it seems like nothing much can happen to one, overeating actually has its negative effects, among them:

1. Weight gain:

Overeating causes your stomach to expand beyond its normal capacity, in order to accommodate more food. Over time, the calories accumulate, and your body stores up so much fat that you definitely have to look bigger.

2. Risk of chronic diseases:

A person who adds weight through overeating is at a higher risk of developing a chronic condition, such as diabetes and other heart-related diseases. This is because, overeating causes your organs to work faster and harder than normal, which leads to overwork, fatigue, and the rest is history.

3. Discomfort:

This is a short-term effect of overeating. It makes you uncomfortable, causes heartburn, constipation, vomiting, purging, etc.

How can one stop overeating?

1. Practice mindful eating:

This is the best and most effective way. It is more of a preventive measure. What it means is that one should be physically present as one eats. The reason why some people overeat is that they engage in mindless eating, that is, they eat along with doing other things. Mindful eating will make you focus on just how much your body needs, and how much you have already taken in.

Also, you could change your plate to a smaller one for a little self-deception. Even if the plate appears full, it still has less calorie content and will help you mind your eating.

2. Avoid skipping meals:

As we stated earlier, skipping your meals tends to make you eat more than you need. This is why you shouldn't skip any meal, no matter how busy you might be.

3. Exercise:

This burns an excessive amount of calories in your body and also keeps you from overeating. Regular exercise regulates your mood and hunger levels. You will long for water instead.

4. Drink more water:

Water is good for the body, no doubt. To prevent yourself from overeating, drink a lot of water. It fills up your stomach and prevents you from eating more than you need. Plus, it works just fine and works even better, in your system.

5. Be disciplined:

Don't be the type of person who resolves to stop overeating today, and goes back on his word tomorrow. Keep your resolutions when you make them. Be mindful. Be conscious. Be determined to achieve that which you have set out to achieve.
